After Surgery: A Simple Recovery Plan for the First 7 Days
Pain control, wound care, walking, diet, and red flags—what most patients should focus on in the first week after surgery.

The goal of week one
The first week is about safe mobility, good pain control, and preventing complications like infection, constipation, and clots.
Daily routine (easy to follow)
- Walk short distances 3–5 times/day (as advised).
- Take medicines on schedule; don’t wait for severe pain.
- Keep the wound clean/dry and check it once daily.
- Drink water and add fiber to prevent constipation.
- Sleep with good support and avoid heavy lifting.
When to call the hospital
- Fever, chills, increasing redness or pus from the wound.
- Severe pain not improving with prescribed medicines.
- Shortness of breath, chest pain, or calf swelling.
- Persistent vomiting, inability to pass urine, or uncontrolled bleeding.
Follow-up matters
Even when you feel better, follow-up visits are where we review wound healing, pathology (if any), and plan physiotherapy or diet adjustments.
